Overview

Ports run 24/7. Port workers have to cope with long 8-12 hour shifts; many in jobs that require focus and are physically demanding. Mental alertness is critical to do a job well and to respond quickly in any circumstances. This is even more so in a port environment where heavy machinery and vehicles are often in use,  and where port workers may have to work in isolated areas. 

Challenge

PSA is keen to explore systems that would detect and warn of fatigue in workers so that steps can be taken before mishaps occur. Any on-body devices should be small, light, and not hinder movement. Any image capturing devices have to address privacy and port security concerns. Systems should include not only detection but an alert system to facilitate interventions such as required rest & relaxation time, provision of snacks etc. PSA envisions a prototype for truck drivers at a unit cost of $300/truck. 

Overview

Infineon is a company at the forefront of technology, creating innovations that achieves more, consumes less and is accessible to everyone. At Infineon,  IC components are required to be baked before it can be packed for shipment. The reason for baking of component is to remove all the moisture from the plastic part of the component. During the Surface Mount Process (SMT), the component will go thru the reflow oven. The temperature of the component rises very quickly, causing any moisture inside to turn into steam. This expansion of water vapor can crack the component, resulting in an unusable or crippled board.  The components are process in batches. If the batch size is big (component quantity of a batch is big), the baking time may take longer and relatively it reduces the time for packing

Challenge

Infineon is interested in discovering methods that enable the rapid cool down of IC components after baking. In particular, to reduce the cooling time by 50% without increasing the existing space allocated for cooling racks. Re-design of the cooling rack is allowed, as well as adding mechanism or cooling devices on the cooling racks. Modification of the oven is possible but change of oven type is not advisable.

Innoventure 2016

Overview

PUB maintains approximately 3,400 km of sewers to ensure that flow conveyance in the sewer is not restricted and thus caused service disruption to the public. Although sewers are designed to achieve self-cleansing velocity at least once a day, indiscriminate disposal of foreign objects into the sewer would disrupt its smooth flow conveyance. As the sewerage environment is classified as a “hazardous area” the associated risk of man-entry is high – robotics could be employed for inspection and repair works

Challenge

PUB would like to explore developing a mobile robotic platform that is able to navigate in various conditions, and without damaging the inner lining of the sewer. The solution should be able to operate under the following conditions: for sewers with diameters of 150-200mm, at 5m depth and 400m length.  The proposed mobile robotic platform will form the foundation for further development work that includes inspection, desilting and localised repair capabilities.

A household name in Singapore, Nestlé has earned the trust of locals for being a food manufacturer with the highest manufacturing standards over the years. As part of it’s commitment to health and wellness, Nestle continuously upholds safety and quality in their food and beverage products. 

Challenge

Milk and chilled yoghurts made from fermented milk are perishable products. In the warm tropical climate of Singapore and most of the Asian region, improper handling or conservation of milk-based products can potentially turn a very nutritional beverage into a hazardous one. Consuming spoiled, curdled or expired milk-based products can often cause food poisoning, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, which are especially worrisome for very young children or the elderly.

This problem statement calls for an inexpensive way of monitoring and indicating to the consumer if the milk/yoghurt inside the container is spoiled. This can be through new technologies in the packaging (preferred), or a “tester kit” which can be packed together with the milk-based product, in which a bit of the product is poured.

Overview

At NUH, staff continuously seek to deliver service of the utmost professionalism and efficiency to patients. Activity tracking is a process of collecting data on a process and the activities covered, such as the sequence of activity, as well as the location and duration for each activity. In hospitals, nurses are involved in a variety of activities during their shifts including following physician rounds, administrative (documentation and charting), performing procedures, serving medications and attending to patients.

Challenge

Understanding the time spent on individual activities, especially time spent with patients, can help hospitals to streamline workflows by identifying areas of waste. The challenge is to develop a system that can reflect movement and activities of nurses in the wards with minimal invasiveness and intervention.
